THE CHOIR

The English Church Choir is a tradition which dates back many centuries. The Cathedral, College and Parish Church Choirs of our country have produced some of our greatest composers and musicians. This tradition continues at the St Andrew’s Parish Church, Old Headington, and greatly enhances the quality of the worship.

We have 4 sopranos, 4 altos, 3 tenors and 3 basses in the choir at present and the ability to call on others for big occasions. The Choir is never full; we are always pleased to hear of people interested in joining. It can be hard work, but it is very rewarding, and we are a friendly group! The only requirements are keenness and the ability to sing reasonably well in tune.

The choir rehearses every Friday evening from 6.30 to 8.00 (during which time the music for the month ahead is prepared) and again on a Sunday morning at 9.30 for a brief warm up. We recognise that not everybody can attend every rehearsal or service and are happy to work with individuals who are trying to juggle their work / life balance and various commitments.

During the Sunday Eucharist - 10.00 every Sunday - the choir leads the singing of the hymns, the psalm and the ‘setting’ and sings an anthem during the distribution of communion.  The service usually ends at about 11:15 and coffee is then served in the adjacent Church Room.

We also sing on other occasions throughout the church year – St Andrew’s Day and all the major festivals, when we have an opportunity to explore the repertoire of church music more widely.

If you are interested in knowing more about the choir or would like to come to sing with us, please contact the Director of Music, Richard Bennett, by email : This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

THE JUNIOR CHOIR

We are planning to start a Junior Choir for children aged from 7 years. The church is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) so, as well as enjoying a good training in singing and general musicianship by following the RSCM Voice for Life Training Scheme, the Choristers will be able to gain a great deal of pleasure from being part of a fine choir.

The Junior Choristers will rehearse on their own on Friday evenings from 6:00 and will be joined later by the adult choir for a joint rehearsal which should end by 7.00.
We would be pleased to hear of any boys or girls who are interested in joining the Junior Choir. To find out more please contact the Director of Music, Richard Bennett, by email : This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
